Welcome to West Lancs Young Carers

|
We hope you'll find a good bit of information about us and what we do for Young Carers in our site. Our News page is constantly updated to let you know what's going on, and there's also a downloadable PDF newsletter available in our Downloads section that comes out quarterly.
You can also download a copy of our Annual Report in there too. All our names, numbers, and faces are in the Contact page, and there are details of other resources for young carers in our Links page. |
Who are Young Carers?
There are many definitions, our Charity uses the following:
A young carer is a person up to the age of 18 who is carrying out significant caring tasks for someone who has a long term physical or mental illness, a disability or is drug or alcohol dependant.
The cared for person is usually a parent or sometimes a sibling. Consequently, the young person’s caring responsibilities restrict their lives to varying degrees because of the need to take care of someone else. |

Young Carers in their own words - Written and edited by 2 young carers from West Lancashire Young Carers Project
All our young carers are encouraged to express their views and the Annual Report is a good way of doing this. The following is a contribution by 2 young carers who gave up an afternoon to share their feelings about being involved in the project.

Friends can go both ways in life. On the one hand, you can have the ones who will stay with you and be loyal through hell and high water…Or you could have the ones who laugh when you tell them a secret, or leaves you in a sticky situation.
But in going to Young Carers you will find the ones who are loyal, because they have been through the same stuff as you. With the friends you have from school you proberbly won’t have the same level of understanding.
Friends from Young Carers would respect you for the decisions that you make in your life, but other friends might judge you for the decisions.

There is also a letter from a parent which speaks for itself.
